Descendants of Jacques Caudebec

Notes

Juriaan Westfall

Interestingly, Juriaan Westfal and Marytjen Codebec are not mentioned among the descendents of Jacques Caudebec and Margaret Provoost in Peter E Gumaers's "A History of Deerpark," even though "Caudebec in America" identifies their residence as Sandyston in Sussex Co., NJ Sandyston is downstream on the Deleware River from Montague, NJ and from Minisink Island, yet is certainly known as part of the Minisink region chronicled in Gumaer

"The area known as "The Minisink" or "The Minisinks" is not a clearly defined area in any of the histories written about the region However we have tried to give you a sense of where it was generally This map shows the greatest extent of the description given to the Minisink region with current place names It generally follows the Delaware River, from ridge top to ridge top on either side of the river Other descriptions actually broaden that a bit As one gets closer to the American Revolution the area shrinks in size and following the war the name went out of use because the area was divided up into towns and villages" from Minisink Valley Historical Society, wwwminisinkorg

6. Jacob Codebec

Minimal evidence is available for Jacob Codebec separate from the other son James (Jacobus) of Jacquest Caudebec and Margaret Provost.

7. James Codebec

Minimal evidence is available for Jacob Codebec separate from the other son James (Jacobus) of Jacquest Caudebec and Margaret Provost. A summary of the issues follows:

One baptism is shown on 7 July 1706 (New Amstrerdam Reformed Dutch Church), that for a child Jacobus.

Caudebec's citation (p. 58) of Jacob's wife's given name is "Jannetje" while the birth record for their daughter Heyltje (Minisink RDC Records, p. 156) identifies her as "Maria."

The Jacob Codebec and Jannetje/Maria Westbrook has daughter Heyltje born 20 Feb 1769. Assuming the Jacob/Jacobus/James baptism above, Jacob would have been at least 63 years old.

Gumaer's Histroy of Deerpark (p. 41) identifies only one son between sons William and Abraham, that being James who married Neelje Decker.

In Gumaer, a bracketed note (p. 44) reads "[There appears to have been another son of Jacob Cuddeback and Margaret Provost named Jacob, who was baptized in the Dutch Church in New York, July 7th, 1706. His name is mentioned likewise in an old deed of his father. He married Jannetye Westbrook.]"

Assuming the aforementioned deed is that reproduced in Caudebec (pp. 36-38, "Deed of Jacob C. to his sons"), relevant portions of the deed contain the following:
"[...] his three eldest [...] sons by name Benjamin William and Jacobus Codebec [...]"
and
"[...]Benjamin William and Jacob Codebec [...]"
and
"[...] all my natural children by name Benjamin William Jacobus Marytie, Elsie Helena Abraham En [and?] Naomie [...]"

James Codebec, according to Caudebec, died in about 1735, so this child could not have been his by a later marriage.

From all the above, only one possibility seems plausible, namely that this Jacob Codebec cited in the Minisink RDC records is not the child of Jacques and Margaret, but belongs to a later generation. This possibility is being explored further by attempting to locate a later generation Jacob/James/Jacobus who married a Westbrook.
