Letters from Byron Cuddeback to Raymond D Cuddeback
December 2, 1934
Paw Paw, MichiganThere is a quite well authenticated tradition that the Cuddeback family originated in France and that the original name was Caudebac. They belonged to a sect called Huguenots and certain social conditions drove them over into Germany and in time to the U.S. They settled in New Jersey, mostly Sussex county, and there are many of them there yet; and also around Port Jervis in Orange county in New York. A good (historical) map will show a little town bearing our name about 20 miles (actually about 10 miles) northeast, of Port Jervis. The story is that there were two of them who were government surveyors and they came west. There are quite a few of them around Lorain, Ohio and I have met some of them. There are not many in Michigan. My son Hanford's family is the only one in Detroit and he has three boys and three girls. Our immediate family is dwindling out as there are too many girls. You should write to your Uncle Fred as he would be glad to see you. Well, maybe I'll find out some more by getting in touch with the state prison. (joke).

“Ray, I took some of my records that I wrote out a few years ago to a typist to type down but she is taking her time to do it so I will just send you some of the principle names of the family”.
My great grandfather's name was Peter Cuddeback and he lived in Skaneateles (not Skeineateles, etc.) New York and my grandfather, whose name was Sylvester, was born there in the year 1800.
Sylvester Cuddeback had 5 brothers -Hiram, Nathan, Norman, Laurence (and George). And the other one (George) I can't remember just now. I don't know much about any of them except Nathan and Norman. Nathan had at least one son, George who did live in Lorain, Ohio. Norman was an old batchelor [sic]. Peter Cuddeback moved to Ohio and settled in Huron or Erie county, I don't know which, and the nearest town was Milan. (Milan is slightly north of the present Erie-Huron county line, in Erie county). That was in 1812 and I have, heard grand dad tell about hearing the naval battle between Perry and the “Bloody Hinglshmen [sic]” on Lake Erie. Sylvester had 7 children - Roland, Hanford (my father), Henry and Mary, Jane, Frances and Laurie. Hanford was, of course, your grandfather. There were 8 children in our, family - Alice (Ferguson), Laverne (Middaugh), Henry, Charles, Frederick, Byron (the writer), William who never married and one died in just a few days. Alice was the oldest and I am the youngest. Alice had 13 children, 4 of whom died young. Those that lived were Adell, Thomas, Winnie, Mattie, Harley, Lela, Leon, Bernice and Vera. Henry had 3 girls - Elsie, Jessie and Irene. Laverne had 4 children - Roscoe, Fern (Benedict), Dennis and William. Charles, your father, comes next and had two boys -yourself (Ray) and Charles. Frederick and William had no children. And last and also least, Byron the writer of this) had 5 children - Hanford, Marie (Snyder), Nina (Larson), Delilah (Snyder), and Neta. Your, grandmother's name was Maria Sherrod and she was born, and raised near Edinboro in Erie county Pennsylvania. We are very closely related to the Sherrods and there [are] many of them too. You have a 3rd cousin in Cadillac with our name and one in Muskegon. If you are interested in the family of your great uncles and aunts, I can get them.

(Revised 11/7/62-Br.A.L.R.C [Brother Adrian Lorance R. Cuddeback])Peter Cuddeback lived in or near Skaneateles, Onondago County, New York and about the year 1800 moved near Milan in Huron County, Ohio where he engaged in farming. His family consisted of 6 boys and no girls to my knowledge. Sylvester, who was my grandfather, was the oldest and was born in the year 1800 in Skaneateles. Where his brothers were born I don't know but probably in the Ohio home. Their names were Hiram, George, Norman, Nathan and Laurence.
Sy1vester Cuddeback married Mary Sherrod and about 1850 moved to Michigan, their oldest son, Roland, having gone to Michigan about 1845 in company with his mother's brother, John Sherrod. Sylvester's children were Roland, Henry, Hanford, Mary, Jane, Laurie and Frances, all of whom settled in the vicinity of Paw Paw except Henry who went to California and settled in Humbolt County where they have lived in Eureka, 1528 E. Street. The rest of the family resided near Paw Paw except Roland who moved to Wexford County when about 50 years of age, where he engaged in farming near Cadillac. His family of eleven children were all born on the farm which is located near Eagle Lake in Paw Paw Township, except the youngest girl, Ardie, born near Cadillac, and possibly some of the older children who were probably born in Ohio. Henry married and went out to California in [unknown] and settled in Humbolt County Humbolt County (as mentioned above) where some of the family are now living. They had two children to my knowledge -Sylvester and Laura.
Hanford married Maria. Sharrod (Roland's sister-in-law) and settled on his father's farm in 1855 where the whole family was born.
Alice (1852-19l5) married A. Deroitt Ferguson in 1872. They had 13 children: Grace, Adell, --, --, Edith, Winnifred, Mattie, Thomas, Harley, Bernice, Leon, Lela and Vera.
Henry (1854-1926) married Elisabeth Bennet in 1874. They had three children, girls, - Elsie, Jessie and Irene.
Laverne (1855-1929) married William Middaugh in 1881. They had three boys and two girls - Roscoe, Fern, Dennis, William, and Lyla who died at two years of age.
Charles (1858-1931) married Agnes Brown in 1887. They had two boys - Ray and Charles.
Frederick (1863- ) married Sadie Hoover in 1892. They had no children
William (1866-1904) never married.
Byron (1896-1937 [added since original]) married Flora Gage in 1891. They had one boy and four girls: Hanford, Marie, Delilah and Neta (1909-12)Roland and Hanford Cuddeback married sisters. They were Rosanna(h) and Maria Sherrod and were second cousins to their husbands as Mary Sherrod, the wife of Sylvester, and the two sisters were our cousins. Roland was married three times - Rosanna(h) Sherrod, Jane Fenton (a widow) his second wife while his third wife was Fannie --. Aunt Rosanna died at the age of 39. Four of Roland's first children were burned to death by the burning of their home in 1849 and two met accidental deaths, all under the age of 15 years. There were six who grew to maturity - Mary, Marvel, Julia, and Adelbert, Frank by his second wife and Ardie by his third wife. Mary married Elmer Lewis and raised three girls - Ethel, Myrtle and Lela. Marvel went to Iowa and located near Burlington. Julia went west and lived with Marvel during her young womanhood and married a Mr. Harmer and moved to Denver, Colorado. They had one son, Harry Walter.
