Benjamin Cuddeback Jr.

Evening Gazette [Port Jervis, Orange Co., NY] July 28, 1870
Death of Mr Benjamin Cuddeback, the Oldest Resident of the Town of Deerpark
Although by no means an unexpected event, yet the announcement of the death of Mr Benjamin Cuddeback , after a lifetime beginning before this century was born, fell with startling effect upon his many friends and relatives in this community Commencing his life in this town, he saw three generations come and pass away, witnessed the tranformation of a wilderness, as it were, into a thriving and populous business community, doing much toward it himself; and finally, surrounded by the comforts that youthful industry, integrity and sterling worth had accumulated, and bowed down by the weight of years rather than the hand of disease, he closed his eyes upon all that was dearto him on earth, and passed peaceably away, throught the gates of death, to the everlasting
Mr Cuddeback was born in this town in September, 1779, and was nearly ninety-one years old at the time of his death Whe a young man he taught school in this valley for a number of years, and was a very proficient instructor
In early life he was married to Blandina Van Etten, a daughter of Levi Van Etten, the date of which we have not at hand, and followed the occupation of farming, being the possessor of as fine as is located in the valley, a portion of which is now within the corporate limits of Port Jervis They were blessed with a large family of children, nearly if not all of whom are living to-day [sic] Of the daughters, the eldest is the wife of James Cuddeback of Cuddebackville; the second of Mr A T Johnson; the third of Mr S B Farnum; the fourth of Peter P Swartwout, Esq, of Huguenot; the fifth of L S Chapin, Wattsburgh, Pa; and the sisth of Mr Wallace Tittsworth There are two sons, the eldest of whom, Mr Elting Cuddeback, resides on thge old homestead, and Dr Thos Cuddeback, at Big Flats, N Y The mother of these children died several years ago, while the father lived to see a numerous progeny of grand children and great-grandchildren spring up around him
Mr Cuddeback was one of the Justices of the Peace of the town of Deerpark shortly after its organization, which office he worthily and satisfactorially filled some ten or twelve years Although not a politician, yet he represented his town in the capacity of Supervisor, in the year 1829, an office not sought by him but conferred on him by his friends and townsmen who esteemed him for his worth and integrity
As to his Christianity his daily life fully testifies He joined the Reformed church in this village, April, 1819, and at the time of his death was the oldest male member of the church He was chosen one of the consistory fifty years ago, and served as an officer, with one or two intervals, a period of forty-two years He was a most exemplary Christian, and his love for the church, and his desire for its advancement was remarkable During the latter portion of his life his faculties became impaired, and at times he would hardly know his friends or even his children, but at the same time his mind would be perfectly clear on matters of religion, and he loved to repeat the passages which abound in the Scriptures, which proved a source of joy and comfort to him in his last days, and made easy the pathway to the tomb
The funeral service of deceased were held yesterday afternoon in the Reformed church The pastor, Rev S W Mills, delivered a very appropriate and fitting discourse, taking his text from Acts 12:33--"For David, after he had served his own generation, by the will of Gog fell asleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption"
At the conclusion of the services at the church, the funeral cortege proceeded to Laurel Grove Cemetery, and the body of the deceased was consigned to its last resting place
