The other information on Elias Cudabac I have is, Father in Revolutionary War-
Benjamin Cudeback- War of 1812- died aged 85.
Elias oldest of 8 children, born 20 Jul 1812 near Port Jervis, Orange Co., NY. In 1822 family came to town of Trye in Seneca Co NY (a wilderness).
On 1 Oct 1836 he married Polly Young-16 children-10 survived-she died 15 Oct 1869. He married 2nd wife, 1870, Mrs Hannah Kellogg Scoville, b 1829, d. Oct 1902 She was the widow of Durcus Scoville. In 1834 they came to Allegany Co., NY, town of Granger near Grove Center, stayed two years, then to Wayne Co., town of Huron for a few years then back to Allegany Co., town of Allen, where he stayed until 1858. Then to Granger on a farm now occupied by son Ernest 1858+22 years = 1880 went to Dalton, NY where he lived 14 years Died 22 Dec 1894. Also shown in 1880 Census, Granger Twp., Allegany Co., NY.Errors in Caudebec in America, by R. "Jake" Jakoubek, Dec. 2007
Caudebec has, on p. 123, under #118 (Benjamin Cudebec) for Elias Cudebec (broken up for clarity) ...
"Elias, b. July 24, 1810, Alleghany Co., NY, m. 1835 Mary Young, and had
"(1) Clarence L, Portage Bridge, Livingston Co., NY, m. (1) Abbie Hatch, m. (2) 1876 Almeda Bennett, 13 children:

"(2) Helen (3) Harriet, m. James Davis, (4) Jemima, m. William Laurie, (5) Ernest, Dalton, NY
(6) Fred, Mullen, NE, (7) Elsie, m. William Hewett, lawyer Custer Co., NE, had 2 children: Ernest Hewett, Mary Hewett, (8) George W, b. Lewis Denigan, d. Feb 28 1884, farmer, Granger, NY"Analyses of census records from 1850 through 1900 for Granger, Hume and Allen in Allegany Co., NY and for Portage, Leicester, and Nunda in Livingston Co., NY leads us to conclude that the list of children for Clarence L Cudebec beginning with #10 is in error. Orlando was the son of Elias as is Frank. There is no record for Adelbert or Bertha Cudebec.
Furthermore, there is no record for Elias' daughter Hattie. This Hattie cannot be confused with Elias' daughter Harriet, who died within a year of her 1860 marriage to James Davis. A Hattie B Augustine, wife to Linus Augustine, is found in the 1880 census for Granger. She was born abt. 1861, so should have appeared in the 1870 census as part of Elias' family but does not.

Marriage Notes for Fenton Peter Cuddeback and Mary Margaret Gress
MARRIAGE: Also shown as Married Abt 1896
Adding Alanson Cuddeback to this family is highly problematic. It is based soley on the appearance of Alanson in the 1850 census married to Catherine
. And this appearance is in Seneca County has one possible set of parents assuming Alanson did not come from elsewhere. WLC's Caudebec in America does not mention a son to Simon and Margery older than John b. 1821. How WLC would have ignored the multiple Alanson Cuddeback is the most problematic part of the problem. Alec Cuddeback, in an email dated 13 October 2006 states:
-----------------------------------------------
I'm adding my two-cents regarding the adding of Alanson Cuddeback to the family of Simon Cuddeback and Margery Middaugh. The notes under Alanson say:"Adding Alanson Cuddeback to this family is highly problematic. It is based soley on the appearance of Alanson in the 1850 census married to Catherine".
I know for a fact that my great-grandfather, John Cuddeback, lived on the family farm, just outside of Seneca Falls (Tyre, NY). In tracing two generations before him, there are two logical choices for which Cuddeback was his grandfather - brothers Simon or Benjamin, sons of William Cuddeback (4th generation), who both lived in that area.
Peter Cuddeback (no. 220) might be a candidate for Alanson's father, as his son John William Cuddeback was born 1812 in Waterloo, Seneca County. However, his second son, Grant Price Cuddeback was born 1820, the same year as Alanson, so that probably rules Peter out as the father.
I have recently corresponded with Gary Higgins, who notes that Benjamin Cuddeback moved to Seneca County around 1822. At first glance, it appears that the older brother Benjamin may have moved to Seneca County first, and that Simon followed him there. This would be based on the Cuddeback website saying Simon & Margery Middaugh were married in 1834, in Minisink. However, this would mean Simon & Margery had 5-7 of their children, BEFORE they were married. I think this is highly unlikely, so I would be very suspect of their wedding date of 1834. Therefore, it's possible both brothers moved to Tyre together, or at least, very close to one another.
So, who was the father of Alanson? Benjamin or Simon? Could be either. But, if the date of Simon's marriage is as inaccurate as it may appear, the exclusion of Alanson as their firstborn is also possible.
The first name Alanson isn't a very common name, and it leads one to believe it was a "family" name, as a lot of first and middle names were in olden days. The name Alanson does not appear anywhere else as a Cuddeback. In the entire list of surnames within the name index, it does appear as Alanson Dewitt Richardson, 1837, but it has ties to Illinois and California. An Alanson Stevens married Zilla Adams, daughter of Ansley Adams, who was a daughter of Mary Westbrook Cudaback and Samuel Adams, but that connection seems pretty far-removed.
So, the logical question to ask is: If the first name Alanson didn't appear in any other Cuddebacks, could Alanson have been a family name associated with his mother's side of the family?. Following this supposition: If we assume Simon Cuddeback and Margery Middaugh were his parents - is there any evidence of an Alanson appearing in the Middaugh family, either before 1820 (Alanson Cuddeback's birth) or shortly thereafter? And, if an Alanson Middaugh is found, was he located anywhere near Minisink, in Sullivan County, where Simon & Margery were married?
Searching Goggle under "Alanson Middaugh"...
We find that an Alanson Middaugh was born in 1821, in Tioga County, NY, which is about halfway between Sullivan and Seneca counties. Also noted is that Alanson Middaugh's father, Ephriam Middaugh was born around 1800 in Orange County, very close to Minisink. Another Ephraim Middaugh (different spelling on first name) was born in 1737 - he married Annatje Hannah Krom, and died in the Battle of Minisink, 1779.
Also... Alanson Davenport was born 1807 in Sussex County, NJ - just across the border from Sullivan County. Although he married Elizabeth Middaugh in
1827 (which would have no influence on Alanson Cuddeback's first name, since he was born in 1820), it is worth noting that Alanson Davenport appears on a website as a descendent of the Krom family, so there may have been an earlier precedent for Alanson being a family name associated with the Kroms, which could have been passed on to the Middaughs via Ephraim Middaugh's earlier marriage to Annatje Hannah Krom. There's plenty of evidence which confirms that Alanson was indeed the father of John Cuddeback, who was the father of Richard J. Cuddeback, who was the father of Howard L. Cuddeback, my dad. The most compelling evidence is that John named one of his sons "Lansing", plus my dad's middle name is "Lansing". A quick check on Google leads me to an article about Lansing, Michigan, which states: "Vaughn (the name Lansing is taken from Alanson, his first name) had an engine hauled by oxen team from Wabasha, Minnesota and built the Lansing Steam Mill that was operated until 1860 before it was converted to a grist mill."
I still have some relatives in the Seneca Falls/Waterloo area, and intend to phone them in the near future, to see if any of them can confirm Alanson Cuddeback as the son of Simon. I'll let you know if I make any progress.
Thanks for your time.
